Master Data in Group Reporting (GR): A Technical Deep Dive

A technical look at the master-data elements that underpin SAP Group Reporting — legal entities, chart of accounts, hierarchies, currencies and intercompany transactions.

Master data establishes the common language and structure for reporting across the organisation — a critical infrastructure component that underpins the entire Group Reporting process.

Key components

Legal entities — clearly define each subsidiary and operating unit (e.g. 'XYZ Inc. – Germany' vs 'XYZ Inc. – France'), with unique entity codes linking each to its financial data. Chart of accounts — a hierarchical structure enables logical account grouping, categorising expenses and revenues by product line or segment. Organisational hierarchies — consolidation trees map reporting structures from holding companies through subsidiaries, determining roll-up and intercompany elimination handling.

Currencies and intercompany transactions

Multi-currency operations require defined conversion rules and automated exchange-rate configuration, specifying rate sources and automating conversion. Proper documentation and reconciliation of intercompany transactions prevent double-counting, with matching procedures identifying and resolving discrepancies between subsidiaries.

Data quality and governance

Continuous auditing and validation maintain integrity. Implement governance frameworks designating data stewards, establish onboarding processes for acquisitions, and integrate master-data systems with the Group Reporting platform to streamline flow and reduce manual error.
