Part 1 – SAP BW/4HANA: What's In It For Me?

SAP BW/4HANA is the next-generation data warehouse — simplified architecture, cloud flexibility and real-time analytics that help businesses extract meaningful insight quickly.

A brief history

Since SAP introduced the first version of BW in 1998, the focus has remained on helping decision-makers access results efficiently. The technology has evolved dramatically — from hardware limitations to in-memory computing. SAP launched BW/4HANA 1.0 in 2016 as its next-generation data warehouse, and all future innovation is now concentrated there (prior BW-on-HANA releases have moved into maintenance mode).

What's in it for me?

SAP BW/4HANA manages all sorts of data and allows access to all models through an open SQL interface. It provides simplified objects suited to modern, layered data-warehouse architectures, with state-of-the-art interfaces for administrators, developers and end-users — leveraging HANA-optimised processes for competitive advantage.

Business agility

Users benefit from simplified modelling, fewer data-warehouse objects, and improved governance. The platform automatically creates HANA views compatible with any SQL tool and visualisation platform — enabling faster, more cost-effective real-time insight.

Cloud-ready

Out-of-the-box deployment options include HANA Enterprise Cloud, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, offering flexible landscape management with improved elasticity and pricing options.

Foundation for the next generation

The platform analyses data in its original location, minimising movement and duplication. Sophisticated data-temperature management, compression, and support for data lakes and streaming data solve data silos while maintaining real-time flexibility.
